"well what are the geysers?" you ask
"see that island?" Bertha points to a nearby floating island, with scalding jets of water shooting into the air from it's floor.
"we take them?" you reply, concerned.
"oh, dunna worry duck, i've learned quite a few tricks in the cult, i can EASILY protect us from the heat." Bertha bends down, rubs her hand together, and begins to chant undiscernible words. you suddenly lose your breath, as a bubble forms around you, but you quickly regain your breath.
"and we are safe!" she cries.
you make your way over to the island, leaping across floating stones that lead up to it.
"we're aiming for that there eye.." she continues.
"the eye?"
"the eye"
"THE eye?"
"THE EYE! now all we have to do is stand on one of the geysers and wait for it to bl-" Bertha suddenly soars into the sky, and lands with a thud upon the eye. her bubble pops. you ready to take flight, and with a huge gushing burst of water, you fly into the air and land, unharmed, upon the eye.
"wow, that was quite... extreme." you groan, as you stretch your back. "where now?"
"we have to make our way down into the main chamber - that's where they commune." Bertha replies.
"and how do we do that?"
"follow me..."
you leap from the eye to the walkway above the wall, and run off to a tower on the edge of the fort. you make your way down a spiral staircase, and come to a large, black vent.
"we can get in through the vent, but it's full of curses and hexes designed to turn intruders inside out." bertha whispers.
"and how do we avoid them?" you ask, terrified of what might be to come.
"luck."
"ah."
you remove the grate with your jet whisk, and crawl inside. its cool, and fresh, expertly kept.
"why do they have air conditioning in hell again?" you grunt as you shuffle through the vent.
"ahh- this isn't hell. it's the underworld. there is a HUGE difference. and obviously they have air conditioning, it's bloody boiling down here."
"what's the difference between hell and here then?"
"hell is where you go when you die, the underworld is where the demons and badthings of Bonwick live, but, they've learned to live down here, and they like it. don't want humans messing around in their lives though, they can have the overworld."
"so they're just like us?"
"like YOU, i can never leave this place. now that i've taken the Pledge of the Underworld, i can never leave."
"really? why did you ever come down here to begin with?"
"well i was raised by a religious family, and they always told me 'if you don't devote to whitney then she will punish you when you die' and i was quite terrified of that, so i found a mage who could get me down here, and i joined the cult. was the early days of course, the Satanic Nun had only since established the cult a month prior, i was one of the first members. but that life is behind me. i want to start a bakery for baby demons, and live out my retirement in a cottage south of the magma lakes."
you're moved by her story. "well, i'll do anything for you to make that happen, you deserve it."
"well, i dont know about that!" she chuckles, and stops shuffling. "oh look - we're here!" she punches the vent out, and leaps into the chamber. it's empty, and silent.
"welcome, to the Chamber of Faith!"
